Movie Review Revolver Rani
Director : Sai Kabir
Kangana Ranaut is simply outstanding, Vir Das surprises with subtle act, Impeccable performancesby supporting cast i.e. Zeeshan Quadri, Piyush Mishra, and Zakir Hussain
Tigmanshu Dhulia mastered art of making films in Hindi heartland of UP/MP i.e. 'Haasil', 'Paan SIngh Tomar, 'Sahab Biwi Aur Gangster'. Now his protegee is ready with this hard hitting female oriented drama.
Film has rather interesitng plot. A small town near Gwalior where a dreaded lady criminal Alka (Kangana Ranaut) is calling the shot but she one enemy rival politician (Zakir Hussain). Balli Mama (Piyush Mishra) has taken care of Alka after her father was murdered. Alka killed her first husband due to infidelity and now her love interest is one Bollywood aspirant Rohan Kapoor (Vir Das). She keeps him like 'toy boy'. How her pregnancy complicates her emotion and political cum gangster life forms the crux of the story.
Performance wise, Kangana Ranaut is simply impeccable once again after universally accepted act in 'Queen'. She presents a complete contrary image from her last outing and her act is full of gusto, emotions and style. Vir Das is surprise package here with real nuanced act as 'toy boy' of leading lady. Piyush Mishra, Zeeshan Quadri and Zaakir Hussain are as impressive as always. Dialogues are pitch perfect though language barrier might limit its appeal in few centers.
Editing is crisp and cinematography is decent. But the real culprit is writing department. Its so inconsistently written especially in 2nd half including climax that it hurts because every actor is putting his best foot. Towards climax writers try to over smart audience with some real confusing swinging events. Till the end, they can not decide whether to kill Kangana's character or not.
But yes its director Sai Kabir who impresses though a bit better written material would had made it exceptional. He shows some command over medium, watch out for Kangana's whole marriage sequence in 2nd half and introduction scene of Vir Das, hilarious!
Film will release tomorrow and should get 900 plus screens. Film will get quite a stiff competition from last week's hit '2 States' and new releases of this week 'Kaanchi'. Film should open with modest numbers and will need good word of mouth to survive
